How to Search Criminal Dockets
The Kansas Judicial Branch Public Access Portal is the quickest online route to a public Graham County District Court case. Set District as the court, Graham County as the location, and Criminal as the case type. You can then query by Case Number, Party Name, Business Name, Party As Business Name, or Citation Number. A date range or a date of birth can tighten results. Expect a Turnstile human-verification step before the search runs.
Enter the full case number if you have it. For a name query, follow the portal's name format. Compare the county, case type, and filing details before you open a match. Then read Case Events in date order. Those events form the docket index. They are not always the complete set of filed papers.
- Open the public portal and select District.
- Choose Graham County and the Criminal case type.
- Search by case number or precise party information.
- Review charges, settings, pleas, orders, and disposition events.
- Ask the clerk for an exact public document or certified copy when needed.
Graham County Criminal Docket Numbers
Graham County moved to the statewide Enterprise Justice system, also called Odyssey, on July 11, 2022. That date matters for any docket search by case number. Older numbers run year, case type, then six digits, like 2022-CR-000001. The newer format adds a county code: GH-2022-CR-000001. Both are format examples only, not live cases.
The letters GH tag Graham County in the current portal. CR usually marks a criminal case. A dead-end search may just mean the old and new formats split. That does not mean no case exists. Try the name search. Confirm the county and case type. Then use the courthouse terminal or the clerk for any pre-migration matter.
What a Criminal Docket Shows
A Graham County criminal docket can show the court, the case category, the filing date, the parties, counsel, the assigned judge, and Case Events in order. Each field appears only where it is public. Charge counts may list an offense, a statute, or a classification. Later entries can record hearings, motions, a plea, dismissal, diversion, judgment, sentence, or appeal. Access rules still govern any document links.
| Case number | Older or Odyssey-style identifier, including the CR case-type segment. |
|---|---|
| Charge | The filed allegation and any public statute or classification, not proof of guilt. |
| Setting | Arraignment, preliminary hearing, pretrial, trial, sentencing, or review date. |
| Resolution | Recorded plea, diversion, dismissal, acquittal, verdict, or other disposition. |
| Order | A journal entry, judgment, sentence, or procedural directive, if public. |
A filed charge is not a final result. A warrant event does not show a conviction, and an old probation entry does not prove current supervision. When the legal result matters, read the latest relevant event and get the signed order.
Graham County Criminal Docket Snapshot
For the year ending June 30, 2025, the Kansas Judicial Branch annual report counted 8 Graham County felony filings and 11 misdemeanor filings. Its disposition tables counted 8 felony dispositions. They also counted 13 misdemeanor dispositions. Filings and dispositions are separate measures. A case filed in one year can reach its disposition in a later reporting period. So the totals do not match the same cases.
The report listed six felony guilty pleas. It also listed one felony diversion or deferred adjudication and one felony dismissal, inside those dispositions. The misdemeanor row showed seven guilty pleas. It showed one diversion or deferred adjudication, four dismissals, and one other disposition. These are workload counts for Graham County courts. They name no one, settle no single charge, and support no same-year conviction rate.
Stages on a Criminal Docket
A Graham County criminal case often opens with a complaint or charging document. A first appearance and bond events come next. Arraignment lets the court address the charge and take a plea. Procedure sometimes requires a preliminary hearing. Under 17th Judicial District Local Rule 703, any waiver of that hearing must be made on the record or in the specified signed writing.
Discovery, motions, and pretrial settings can fill the docket with Case Events. The case itself stays open. From there the path may branch toward plea, diversion, dismissal, trial, judgment, and sentencing. Probation, review, violation, modification, completion, or appeal events may follow. Local Rules 17A and 717B describe standard probation conditions and bond supervision. Every docket entry still has to be judged on its own terms.
Docket flow: Charge Filed › Arraignment › Pretrial › Plea or Trial › Disposition › Sentencing
Graham County Criminal Docket Outcomes
The most common reading error is treating the first entry as the last. A complaint states an allegation. A summons or arrest event shows process. Neither answers how the case ended. A plea is not sentencing, diversion is not a conviction, and even a dismissal entry deserves a close look at its wording and whether it resolves every count.
Read through the disposition. Match each charge to later plea, dismissal, trial, judgment, and sentence entries. If the public chronology stops early, describe the current status as unverified and ask the clerk for the exact public order.
The public portal itself says its information is not the official court record. It is still handy for finding the Graham County case number and the event trail. For formal proof, get the clerk's certified judgment or the exact court document.
Which Court Holds Criminal Dockets
Felony prosecutions in Graham County land in District Court. Most state charges start there. The court sits within the six-county 17th Judicial District. The Clerk of the District Court keeps one unified criminal docket for it. A district magistrate judge works inside that same District Court structure rather than keeping a separate justice-court docket.
Municipal court works differently. It hears city ordinance violations and certain statutory municipal equivalents. So a Hill City ordinance case can stay with the city's municipal court instead of appearing as a Graham County District Court criminal result. Check the citation or court notice first. Kansas also has no separate county justice-of-the-peace layer to search.
The Kansas criminal venue statute shows the district-court jurisdiction behind this split.
That statute explains why both must come first. Confirm the issuing court and the charge type before any docket search.
Graham County Docket Versus KBI
Don't confuse a Graham County criminal docket with a Kansas Bureau of Investigation criminal-history report. The docket follows one case through filings and rulings. The KBI product is different. Its rules are statewide. Its public name-based service may omit disposed arrests without conviction, completed diversions, expunged matters, stale records without disposition, and juvenile matters under the limits KBI describes.
| Source | Best use | Key limit |
|---|---|---|
| District Court docket | Case Events, hearings, pleadings, and disposition in one Graham case | Not every document is online |
| KBI history | Separate statewide adult conviction-history service | Not the certified Graham court file |
| Clerk-certified record | Official copy of a named public order or judgment | Requires an exact request and current fee confirmation |
Match the tool to the question. To follow a single prosecution through to its outcome, read the court docket and its later disposition events.
Public Access and Sealed Criminal Dockets
Graham County criminal case information and Case Events may sit online or on a courthouse public terminal. Not all of it is public. Kansas Supreme Court Rule 22 excludes specified case types and documents. Rule 24 requires protection of personal information. Seals, expungement orders, and other laws can restrict a whole case, one document, a field, or a redacted part. The index is not the file.
The Kansas expungement statute describes which criminal records qualify.
This framework is one reason a blank search result proves nothing about whether a case ever existed.
Key access rules: Rule 22 governs public case information and court records. Rule 24 governs personal-information redaction. K.S.A. 21-6614 governs eligible expungement. Each restriction must be applied to the specific record.
Graham County Criminal Docket Fallbacks
A dead-end CaseSearch result is not the end. Recheck District, Graham County, Criminal, the party-name format, and both possible case-number structures. A miss can still mean a city ordinance docket, restricted material, expungement, a portal limit, or an older record. It is never proof that no matter existed.
The Graham County Courthouse keeps a public terminal. The Clerk of the District Court sits at 410 N. Pomeroy Avenue, Suite 9, Hill City, Kansas 67642, phone (785) 421-3458. A focused mailed or in-person request should name the court, the case number if known, the case type, the date range, and the exact event or document. A Kansas Open Records Act request works too. The clerk posts no separate fee schedule or counter hours for Graham County. Ask first. Confirm both before you order copies or travel.
