How to Search the Graham County Court Docket
Every Graham County court docket search starts with the Kansas Judicial Branch Public Access Portal. Accept the user agreement first. Then pick District as the court and choose how you want to search. The form takes a case number. It also accepts a citation number, a party name, a business name, or a party entered as a business name. When the county filter appears, choose Graham County. A case category and a filing-date range will trim a long list of matches. Guests get basic public case information there. Still, the portal does not promise online viewing of every paper in the clerk's file.
A full case number works best. Name searches should follow the format of Last, First Middle Suffix. Wildcards need at least three letters of a last name. A first name needs only one letter. Before trusting a match, pause. Check the court, county, type, filing date, and case number against what you already know before calling it the right Graham County docket.
- Open CaseSearch, accept the agreement, and choose District.
- Select the search type and enter the name, number, business, or citation.
- Choose Graham County and add a case category or filing dates if useful.
- Complete the human check, run the search, and compare the result fields.
- Use the courthouse terminal or ask the clerk when the online index is incomplete.
Graham County Docket Portal Filters
One distinction trips up many searchers. The portal separates the search method from the case category. Party Name is how you search, while Criminal, Civil, Family, and Probate or Mental Health are filters on what kind of case you get. A file-date range limits when a case began. It will not find hearing dates. Citation Number can pull up some traffic information, but a city matter still lives with the court printed on the citation.
| Portal field | Use for a Graham search |
|---|---|
| Court | Choose District for Graham County District Court records. |
| Search Type | Pick case number, party, business, party as business, or citation. |
| County | Select Graham County, not another county in the 17th Judicial District. |
| Category | Try Criminal, Civil, Family, or Probate or Mental Health when known. |
| Dates | Use filing dates to narrow results, not to locate a hearing date. |
What a Graham County Court Docket Shows
The portal labels its chronological index Case Events. Every line records one action in the case, whether a filing, a notice, a setting, an order, or a disposition. Keep two cautions in mind. An event title may not be the whole document behind it. And a setting is only a scheduled court appearance, not proof the hearing ever took place. Read each event's date, description, party data, court, and case status together. Treat them as one picture. Confirm anything that affects an appearance or deadline with the Graham County District Court.
| Case Number | Identifies the file. A newer format may look like GH-2022-CR-000001. |
|---|---|
| Parties | Names the people or entities shown in the public index, subject to access limits. |
| Case Events | Lists filed items and court actions in date order. |
| Hearing Settings | May state a date, time, setting type, judge, and location. |
| Court & Judge | Shows the venue and assignment; a district-wide judge may serve several counties. |
| Disposition | Records an outcome when entered, without replacing the signed order. |
Graham County Docket Numbers Changed
Graham County switched to the statewide Odyssey system on July 11, 2022. The official search guide treats that migration as the dividing line between two numbering styles. Older cases can carry a year, a type code, and a six-digit sequence, like 2022-CR-000001. Newer files may add the county abbreviation up front. That leading county abbreviation produces a form such as GH-2022-CR-000001. Neither string is a live case. They are format examples only.
An old number that returns no match does not mean the file vanished. Keep the hyphens and letter order intact. Try the proper Graham County category. Then ask for a courthouse terminal or a clerk-file search. Cases that straddle the migration date can show uneven event and document coverage online.
Which Graham County Courts Keep Dockets
Graham County District Court is the state trial court of general power here. It sits in the six-county 17th Judicial District. The clerk holds district criminal, civil, domestic, probate and mental-health, juvenile, small-claims, and related case records. City ordinance matters belong to municipal courts instead. Federal civil, criminal, and bankruptcy cases run on federal systems. Search the wrong layer and even a good name or citation will come back empty. That is the most common reason a lookup fails.
| Court | Docket Covers | Where to Search |
|---|---|---|
| Graham County District Court | State criminal, civil, family, probate, juvenile, small claims | CaseSearch, public terminal, or Clerk of the District Court |
| Hill City Municipal Court | Hill City ordinance and municipal traffic matters | City court contact, citation, and available payment route |
| Bogue or Morland city route | Any city matter named on a citation | Citation and official city administrative contact; no official web docket was located |
| Federal courts | Federal and bankruptcy cases | PACER and the District of Kansas court systems |
Graham County Docket Access Points
Online access is only one channel for Graham County court records. If CaseSearch comes up thin, try another channel. Use the public terminal at the Graham County Courthouse, call the district-court clerk, inspect an open record at the counter, or mail a focused written request. The courthouse sits at 410 N. Pomeroy Avenue, Suite 9, Hill City, Kansas 67642. An official judiciary directory lists (785) 421-3458 and fax (785) 421-5463. Check current counter hours before you travel. Confirm contact details ahead of time.
A written request should name Graham County. Add the case number if known, the case type, a date range, the exact document, and how you want delivery. The Kansas Judicial Branch KORA form covers email, mail, pickup, or fax. Ask for a cost estimate first. Graham County posts no local copy and certification fee schedule.
Access layers: A portal index, courthouse terminal, clerk-file inspection, copied document, certified copy, and transcript are different products. Ask for the one actually needed.
Finding Graham County Court Dates and Settings
A Case Events line can show a hearing setting. Even so, settings get reset, continued, canceled, or replaced by a later order. Pull up the case and read the newest event. Check the date, time, judge, location, and setting type against each other. Kansas runs a hearing-reminder service. Signing up never lifts the legal duty to follow court notices. The court posts no public Graham-specific daily calendar.
When a date decides whether you must appear, confirm it with the clerk or the filed notice itself. The Graham County court calendar walks through the portal, clerk, notice, and reminder routes in more detail. One more trap: a county closure notice alone does not cancel a setting. Only the court's order or clerk confirmation controls that.
Graham County Docket Scale
Kansas Judicial Branch reports break out local workloads for the year ending June 30, 2025. Graham County logged 19 district criminal filings. Civil filings came to 119 across regular, limited, and domestic groups, and traffic added 145. On the disposition side, the tables show 21 criminal, 106 civil, and 155 traffic. Treat these as aggregate report counts. They are not results for any person. Filings in a period need not match dispositions in the same one.
Limited actions made up the biggest civil filing group. Traffic carried its own wider set of labels and outcomes. That variety is why the case category and court filter still matter, even in a county whose July 2025 population estimate is 2,371.
Public Access to Graham County Court Dockets
Kansas keeps public case information separate from public documents. Supreme Court Rule 22 controls remote and terminal access. It lists the categories that stay nonpublic. Rule 24 guards personal data in filings. The Kansas Open Records Act opens a written public-record route, but a court rule, seal, expungement, or statutory restriction still wins. A blank search result proves nothing about whether a case ever existed.
Key Rules:
Kansas Supreme Court Rule 22 controls public access to electronic court records and lists restricted case and document types.
Kansas Supreme Court Rule 24 requires filers to protect specified personal data.
K.S.A. 45-218 sets the public-record request and response framework, subject to lawful restrictions.
Graham County Docket Result Limits
Rule 22 closes certain case types. Adoption, child-in-need-of-care, juvenile offender, protection-order, expunged, and other listed types or documents stay off limits. Divorce, custody, guardianship, mental-health, and grand-jury materials can carry special limits too. Rule 24 also shields full Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, and other personal identifiers. Courts may redact a public document rather than expose protected data. A docket entry never proves an allegation true. It records procedure only. Read later Case Events for dismissal, plea, judgment, sentence, or another disposition. Want the authoritative version? Request the filed order or a certified copy from the custodian. Trust that instead of a portal summary.
Graham County Docket Odyssey Shift
The July 2022 Odyssey migration brought Graham County into Kansas's statewide eCourt rollout. Numbering changed. So did the practical line between legacy and newer electronic material. Kansas Courts e-filing serves authorized filers. CaseSearch serves the public search side. Still, an e-filing account does not convert into unrestricted public access.
The portal opens with terms. It gives basic guest details, an ID.me route for approved elevated users, and a human-verification control. The canonical link stays the Kansas Judicial Branch CaseSearch address even if its service host changes. Older Smart Search instructions still help with name and number syntax. Trust the live interface for the buttons and filters.
The Graham County Clerk and Docket Records
Ask the Clerk of the District Court, not the Graham County Clerk/Election Officer. The court clerk keeps district Case Events, case files, copies, and eligible certification. The county clerk handles separate local-government duties. The Register of Deeds holds land instruments. The sheriff may keep law-enforcement records. None of them substitutes for the district docket.

Graham County Court Docket History
Hill City's role as the access point runs deep. Graham County was organized in 1880 with Millbrook as its first county seat. A tornado destroyed Millbrook in 1887. The county seat moved to Hill City in 1888. The county's official history credits J.R. Pomeroy with donating most of the courthouse tract. That site is still in courthouse use. The modern district-court address on Pomeroy Avenue carries the location story forward.
The Kansas Judicial Branch home page anchors the statewide route. It leads to court information, rules, and the official CaseSearch path used for Graham County.
The Graham clerk and courthouse remain the record-level fallback.
Graham County District Court Docket
K.S.A. 4-218 puts Graham County in the 17th Judicial District. Decatur, Norton, Osborne, Phillips, and Smith counties join it. The case stays in Graham County. Assignments cross the whole district. So a judge or magistrate named on a Graham County event may also serve elsewhere. Check the county and venue fields rather than assuming a district-wide judicial assignment creates a separate docket. The Kansas Legislature's district statute sets out the six-county lineup.
Six counties share one district. That structure helps with court organization, but it never replaces a Graham-specific case or hearing search.
Graham County Docket by Numbers
Graham County is big and lightly peopled. The 2020 Census counted 2,415 residents across 898.53 square miles, about 2.7 people per square mile. Across that open country, a remote portal, phone confirmation, and written request go far. Some document-level needs still require a Hill City trip. A small population never means one shared docket.
The U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts page supplies the county's population and area figures.
Graham County is vast and sparsely settled. Confirm the right court and access channel before driving to Hill City.
Court Dockets by City in Graham County
Three incorporated cities appear in official county and state sources. Hill City, the county seat, has a documented municipal court. Bogue and Morland show much thinner footprints. So let a city citation control the first contact and search route. A municipal record stays separate from the district docket. A payment service can accept a citation. That does not merge the records.

The 17th Judicial District's local rules allow a search of anyone entering a courtroom or ancillary courtroom, including briefcases, parcels, and purses, and prohibit unauthorized weapons throughout the court facility. Photography, video, and sound recording are not allowed without permission. No public parking map, ADA-route description, or elevator location was located, so calling ahead is the practical way to plan a visit.
